Washington State Recruiting: 2014 Quarterback Targets and Positional Analysis
By Josh Davis
It’s officially Summer of 2013 in the major sports world and time to try to hold serve until the Fall gets closer and we can really start looking forward to the football season again. Football and basketball recruiting is in full swing and we’re going to cover every aspect of it here at ACU.
Today we delve into the quarterback targets on Washington State’s offers list and where the position currently stands.
2014 Offers
Cardinal Gibbons HS, Fort Lauderdale, FL – 6’1″, 175 lbs
- David Cornwell
Norman HS North, Norman, OK – 6’5″, 215 lbs
- Christian Chapman
Carlsbad HS, Carlsbad, CA – 6’1″, 190 lbs
–“Quarterback U” is actually currently in decent shape moving forward. The commitment of Peyton Bender gives Leach the annual quarterback that he likes to get and now he can move on to other positions. However, don’t discount a possible decommit by Bender as he gets more and more popular after his Elite 11 experience yielded the many praises of coaches at the camp, including one Trent Dilfer. He has said he is solid to WSU at this point in the game, but if redshirting and then playing 3 seasons behind Tyler Bruggman starts to sound a little bit less fun than maybe playing by his sophomore season somewhere else, it could happen. It would open the door to either of the other two, but we wouldn’t expect them to jump on board so Leach would have to open the search back up.
Meanwhile incumbent starting junior Connor Halliday, redshirt freshman Austin Apodaca, 2013 signee Tyler Bruggman, 2013 signee Isaac Dotson and walk-on’s Jesse Brown, Dominec Rockey and Tyler Falk will all be in the fold this Fall. That’s seven quarterbacks, with three really having any shot at playing time. That’s college football but it’s important to also note that while they’ll never admit it, some are coming here to catapult their shot at playing significantly at another school (likely in the D-II ranks) after a couple years of refined practicing and learning under Leach.
