Your Bye Week Playbook: College Football Games Worth Watching

As you prepare for a weekend without Cougar football, here’s a look at some games you may want to check out!

Detroit Tigers @ Seattle Mariners
Saturday Game Time: 5:38 PM
Sunday Game Time: 5:03 PM

I know this has nothing to do with the Cougs or football, but… THE SEATTLE MARINERS ARE IN THE PLAYOFFS. Quick catch-up for those who aren’t aware: the Tigers blew a 15.5-game division lead (the largest collapse in modern baseball history!) but bounced back to beat their rival, the Cleveland Guardians, in the Wild Card three-game set. They’ve got arguably the best pitcher on the planet in Tarik Skubal, but after a scorching 17–7 September, I’ll take the Mariners in 3.

Now that I’ve gotten that out of my system—onto the college football slate!

FRIDAY NIGHT

7:30 PM: Colorado State (1–3) @ San Diego State (3–1) | SDSU -5.5
Where to Watch: CBS Sports Network

Our two Division I wins of the year facing off—can San Diego State’s defense continue to look dominant in games against everyone not named WSU? Is Colorado State’s offense truly one of the worst in the country? I expect a comfortable win for the Aztecs.

SATURDAY

9:00 AM: #14 Iowa State (5–0) @ Cincinnati (3–1) | ISU -1.5
Where to Watch: ESPN2

The unbeaten Cyclones visit a Cincinnati team whose only loss was by three points in their opener against Nebraska. Coming off a big win over Kansas, Iowa State faces a tough Big 12 test.

12:30 PM: Boise State (3–1) @ #21 Notre Dame (2–2) | ND -21.5
Where to Watch: NBC

After a disastrous opener against South Florida, Boise’s offense has caught fire, averaging 49 points over the last three games. Eastern Washington, Air Force, and Appalachian State may not be a murderer’s row, but don’t be surprised if Boise covers—or gives the Irish a real scare.

12:30 PM: #24 Virginia (4–1) @ Louisville (4–0) | LOU -6.5
Where to Watch: ESPN2

Fresh off a huge win over Florida State, Virginia now faces undefeated Louisville. With WSU set to play the Cavaliers in two weeks, this is a great chance to size them up.

12:30 PM: #16 Vanderbilt (5–0) @ #10 Alabama (3–1) | BAMA -11.5
Where to Watch: ABC

Last year Vanderbilt stunned Kalen DeBoer’s Crimson Tide in Nashville. Can the Commodores repeat the magic in Tuscaloosa against a team that’s been waiting for them?

4:30 PM: #3 Miami (4–0) @ #18 Florida State (3–1) | MIA -4.5
Where to Watch: ABC

The rivalry is renewed with both teams chasing CFP dreams. Miami’s Carson Beck is protected by one of the nation’s best offensive lines, with a defense touting one of the best lines on that side of the ball. Throw out the records when 80,000 strong are doing the Seminole chop, anything can happen.

Bye weeks are never fun, but hopefully you’ll find enough entertainment on this fall weekend to hold you over until the next Coug game.
