After this weekend’s victory the Cougars found themselves in the national rankings!

No, not the football team. An opening week loss to Portland State makes that extremely difficult. Your Cougar Soccer team won on Friday night and again Sunday afternoon to move to a perfect 6-0-0 on the year.

Not unlike other wins this season, the Cougs needed some late magic to move out of a tie and earn the win. In both games.

“Washington State now sits at #21 in the Top Drawer Soccer rankings.”

On Friday, Oklahoma State came to to Pullman and pushed WSU to the limit before surrendering the game-winner to Cara Wegner in regulation. Then on Sunday, with a few minutes remaining in the second and final overtime period, senior Kourtney Guetlein netted the winning goal. Sunday’s match versus the Titans of Cal State Fullerton marked the first time this season the Cougars have faced a deficit, down 1-0 early.

Washington State now sits at #21 in the Top Drawer Soccer rankings. Also worth noting. WSU joins Tulsa and Rutgers as the only three programs with perfect records. No other schools in the country have avoided a single loss or tie.

This start is remarkable in the fact that the WSU Soccer program has been a revolving door of head coaches the past few seasons. Success still seems to come, however, as they have reached the NCAA tournament the past couple years. First-Year Head Coach Todd Shulenberger has his team playing lights out.

WSU takes the field next against Gonzaga (1-3-3) this Thursday Night, 7 PM at the Lower Soccer Field in Pullman.
