Prediction and Early Impact:
Kingston Fernandez is the type of player that will beat the offensive lineman on his first move and is quick and agile enough that he is able to get to the ball quickly and can keep up with the quick moves by the ball carrier. More often than not Fernandez was double teamed in high school and was able to use his speed and first step to the best of his abilities and get by the lineman to the ball carrier.
Fernandez will play Buck and defensive end for the Cougars and I see him taking a red shirt his first year. At Buck Kache Palacio will be in front of him and has game experience, with JC transfer Ivan McLennan stepping in after a redshirt year. At defensive end Xavier Cooper and Matthew Bock will be in front of him as they also have the game experience. There are others like Jalen Canty coming in that may force Fernandez to be a full-time Buck.
At 6’3 – 245 Fernandez is a little bit smaller than the average Buck or DE and could really use the year to add some more to his size. Still, he’s about the size of Kache Palacio, so he may be ready to play immediately if he grasps the system and shows some of that speed off in Fall camp.
