3-Star OLB Greg Hoyd Signs With Washington State Cougars on Signing Day
By George Means
The Departure of Justin Sagote and Eric Oertel, give the Coug Defense some pause, but the returning backer corp is game ready and battle hardened. This returning group of linebackers is by far the strongest on the defense. Returning leaders include Cy Coen, Tana Pritchard, Kache Palacio, and of course Daryl Monroe will all make significant impacts in the Pac next year. The incoming class of backers should plan to sit back and learn. Complacency as freshman, however, should never be part of the program in Pullman as Mike Leach has proven he believes in trial by fire.
Greg Hoyd is the type of athlete the Cougs need. A big frame and clear eyes are obvious when evaluating his film, but he still has some work to do. His inside play was great in high school, but moving to the Pac-12 he will have to learn that he is toward the small end of players on the field. Adding some bulk to his 210 lb frame could make the difference in when we see Hoyd on the field at Martin Stadium.
If his fundamentals are improved and he learns to play with his head, rather than dominating the kids from Palm Springs. Let’s remember, CML sees something sharp here, so we can expect something special in either seven or 19 months.
