WSU Football Recruiting: Linebacker Luvu Commits to Cougars

Washington State has in the recent past been a consistent presence in American Samoa, especially since “Coach Joe” Salave’a jumped on board with the Mike Leach coaching staff late in 2011. On Friday, Salave’a and the Cougs added to the AS legacy with their eleventh commitment of 2014, Frankie Luvu from Pago Pago.

Luvu is around 6’2″, 215 lbs and is a projected linebacker at Wazzu, though he plays as a physical/play-making safety for his high school.

I’ts difficult to sugar-coat the fact that it is very difficult to find “natural”, BCS-level athletes when you look at American Samoa film. Kids aren’t really “jumping” out for the most part, based on the overall lesser level talent. But this kid jumps straight off the film as a generally speaking, good looking athlete and as the term goes, he “fits the mold” of a Pac-12 outside linebacker. He is a little small for the position currently, but should add 15-20 lbs on his frame when he arrives, much like Ivan McLennan and most of the other current Cougar ‘backers have done.

The Cougs have 16 Cougars currently on the roster of Polynesian descent on the roster (playing largely into the decision of Luvu), and all but one of them (Justin Sagote) will return for the 2014 campaign.

Northern Illinois, Iowa State, New Mexico and a couple other schools were starting to jump on board for Luvu, but Washington State is so far his only offer.
