WSU Baseball Weekly: Opening Series in the Books

The Washington State baseball team began it’s season late last week, posting a 1-2 opening-series record against Western Carolina in Cullowhee, N.C.

Game three was the highlight of the series for WSU, as redshirt freshman 3rd baseman Nick Tanielu hammered a 2-run double in the 7th inning to break a 1-1 tie for what eventually became the game-winning hit. The Cougs would go on to win 4-1 in a game that saw five Cougar relief pitchers combine to retire 14 of 15 batters, including half of those on strikeouts.

The team lost it’s opening two games by scores of 8-5 and 15-10. In the opener on Friday, coach Donnie Marbut blamed the offensive ineptitude at timely junctures. In Saturday’s loss, one only has to point at the seven errors racked up (leading to 12 unearned runs) to figure out the math.

Washington State will prepare for a 4 game set vs Eastern Michigan over the weekend, which includes a double-header on Saturday.
