WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – Following another impressive weekend, Lia Galdeira picked up her third Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honor of the season, the conference office announced Monday.
Galdeira averaged 20.5 ppg and 7.0 spg for the Cougars who beat Arizona State University and the University of Arizona over the weekend. It’s WSU’s first road sweep of the Arizona schools since 1994-95. The freshman guard scored 20 points, grabbed eight boards and recorded seven steals in the 54-43 victory over Arizona State Friday before posting 21 points and seven steals in the 60-50 win at Arizona, Sunday. Galdeira scored 12 points in the second half against the Wildcats, including six straight that sparked a deciding 19-4 run to give WSU its first win in Tucson since 2009.
The Kamuela, Hawaii native shot over 47 percent in the two games and has scored 20+ points in three straight games and four times this season. Galdeira paces WSU in scoring at 14.7 ppg, rebounding at 5.2 rpg and in steals with 64.
It is the third weekly accolade for Galdeira this season after earning Freshman of the Week honors on consecutive weeks in December. Galdeira’s three weekly honors matches the most in a single season by a Cougar since Jenni Ruff did so during the 1995-96 season.
Washington State hosts USC, Friday at 6 p.m. and No. 17 UCLA, Sunday at Noon.
