The Washington State Cougars are off to a good start on the official signings for the 2013 class, as all three expected prospects from the JC ranks sent their Letters of Intent in Wednesday morning (first day signing period for late junior college recruits). Not only that but the Cougars have received word that their Grayshirt players (late enrollees from the previous recruiting class) will be enrolling for the Spring Semester beginning in January.
Due to our upcoming Official Signee Player Profiles, along with the Position Analysis that we’re constructing, here is a simple list of the prospects that signed yesterday morning and the 2 Grayshirts enrolling with them:
- DE Lyman Faoliu – 6’3″ 275 (College of San Mateo)
- LB Ivan McLennan – 6’3″ 220 (El Camino CC)
- OL Jacob Seydel – 6’6″ 285 (Riverside CC)
- WR Robert Lewis – 5’10” 160 (South East High – South Gate, CA)
- OL B.J. Salmonson – 6’5″ 285 (Nooksack Valley High – Everson, WA)
Mike Leach and the coaching staff are ecstatic about the LOI’s that they’ve obtained and are just getting started with their final stretch to both keep their verbal commits on board, as well as drive for a few more prospects to grow their depth and competition. Along with pointing out that the early enrollment will give all five of the guys a leg up in conditioning and practice time, Leach had the following comments about this part of the class:
"We are excited about the start to this class. Our coaching staff has worked extremely hard over the past year and this class is going to be key for us in the future. Lyman and Jacob give us added size on both lines which is always a priority and Ivan gives us another athletic playmaker on defense. Robert will certainly add speed to our receiving unit and B.J. is a person who is physical and embraces contact."
Extra Point: WR Vince Mayle is still expected to sign in the Fall. He won’t get done with classes until after the Spring Semester is over and will be with the Cougars for Fall camp if everything goes as planned. He has been in constant, recent contact with new teammates to be and has been said to be outspoken about his allegiance to Washington State.
