WSU Baseball: Jones’ Grand Slam Paces Cougs against Portland
By Josh Davis
Say “Hello” to the Cougar record books Mr. Derek Jones! After tying the WSU home run
record over the weekend, Jones didn’t waste the opportunity to make his record special in Portland. It was already 4-0 with the bases loaded when Jones stepped to the plate in the fourth inning. After he connected it was 8-0 and the game was over, for all intensive purposes, and Jones had cemented himself in Cougar history in a very special way. “A home run is a home run, but a grand slam is special,” Jones said. “It would have been nice to do it in front of the home crowd, but I am glad to have it over with so I can concentrate on playing baseball in the second half of the season.”
So the Cougs have begun a bit of a run with a 3-1 record in their last 4 and now have a big 3 game home stand against Utah before hitting the road again for 5 straight. WSU really needs to come out of this weekend with a series victory to keep the momentum going. With a 16-13 overall record the Cougs are now set up to begin the second half of the season with a renewed energy and with an easier schedule coming down the stretch, a post season berth out of the Pac-12 is there for the taking if Jones and Co. can keep the offense rolling and the pitching staff stays on target. 4 pitchers combined for the shutout at PU so the confidence is definitely growing.
Go Cougs!
