Washington State Football Gameday Huddle: Cal Golden Bears

I am not usually a fan of 7:30 start times in a game I want to see, because I gotta wait all day to see it. You know how it is, but actually today I’m really happy the game is late, because for some reason I think Connor Halliday sees the field better at night, so this is a good chance for him to prove me right. I don’t know why but I just don’t have a lot to say today like I normally do. Instead I’m in “wait and see” mode for the first time this season. The Cougs gotta prove something, anything to me today. I’ve been and will continue to be on the “better than the record shows” bandwagon, but at some point I would like the Cougs to give me some ammo for that statement.

There are a couple of things to talk about though. Did you know the Cougars are 3rd in the Conference and 9th in the country in sacks this season? Also, Teondray Caldwell has a Pac-12 best 26.8 yard average on kickoff returns, which helps the Cougs rank 24th nationally. I bring those numbers up because the Cougars will need to be solid tonight on defense and in special teams to beat Cal.

As is our new style under Breske, we need to get after the Bears’ qb, Zach Maynard today, especially on 3rd down and medium to long. All 3 sacks last week came on 3rd down plays and like most teams the Cougs seems to do their best blitzing when they don’t have to worry about the run. As a result of the new aggressive nature, Deone Bucannon is tied for the Pac-12 lead with 4 ints and boy would it be prime for him and some other Coug defenders to come up with a couple picks tonight!

There are some great Pac-12 games to be seen today, including ND/Stanford, Washington/USC, OSU/BYU and UCLA/Utah so I’m going to go watch some football now and countdown all day to Cougar football, at which point I hope to be pleasantly surprised by a Wazzu team that comes out for both halves and plays good football to win at home. I hate to say it that way but I mean let’s face it, it would be a bit of a surprise to see a full game from this team. If they put one together, they can win.

Go Cougs!
